What Is FAFSA?

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. 

It is the form students fill out each year to see if they qualify for financial aid, including: 

• Federal grants (money you don’t pay back—like Pell Grants) 

• Federal loans (money you borrow and repay later) Work-study (on-campus jobs to help pay expenses) State and college-based aid (scholarships or tuition programs) Colleges use FAFSA information to build each student’s financial aid package.

• Apply online via the advance link: (Or Search “FAFSA” using a search engine and follow the prompts) 

• Other ways to access: Through your school’s financial aid office (they can help you complete it) 

When to apply:

 FAFSA opens every December for the next school year

Submit as early as possible, because some aid is first-come, first-served. 

What You Need to Apply Students will need: 

1. FSA ID A username and password used to sign into FAFSA.

2. Personal Information Social Security number Date of birth Legal name (must match SSN) 

3.Tax Information Student and/or parent federal tax returns W-2s or income information (The FAFSA automatically transfers tax data using the Direct Data Exchange, so you usually don’t enter numbers manually.) 

Buff Promise – West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) Covers 100% of tuition and fees for students with family incomes below a certain cutoff (usually around $50,000–$80,000, depending on the year) and that qualify for the pell grant Students must complete the FAFSA and maintain certain academic requirements.
